Keeping Kids Cool: Ways to Stay Sane on Your Road Trip

Road TripsSummer road trips can be really fun, but if you have kids in tow, your little ones can become restless quickly – and equally quickly driving you insane! Don’t listen to choruses of “Are we there yet?” by planning ahead some ways to keep your kids occupied while you’re out on the road.

Lay Down the Ground Rules

Before you even put the car in reverse to back out of the driveway, lay some ground rules down. Tell your children that you are going to be in the car for an extended period of time and there will be breaks but not every time they want to get out. By doing this, you establish the standards for the trip and outline the guidelines for them to follow.

Bring Toys

Have your kids bring toys – a lot of them. This will keep them occupied during the long stretches of travel on the trip. Also, be sure to have them bring something like a football or soccer ball for when you stop. A little physical activity could wear them out, leading to potential naps during the trip.

Set Alone Time

After a while, everyone could get real tired of being in the car with one another. To combat this, set up designated “alone time” where each child does their own thing. Have one child watch a movie while another listens to music or plays a portable gaming system. This will help keep the peace.

Plan Your Meals Ahead of Time

Plan the timing of your meals along your route so that you have everything outlined in advance. Don’t go too long without eating, either, as this could lead to some cranky travelers. When you do decide to stop for a snack or meal, don’t rely on fast food alone. Don’t forget to pack some healthy snacks, as well, to fill the space between meals and remind your kids that they can’t eat whatever when they’re on vacation.

Script Out a Scrapbook

Planning out a scrapbook can be a fun activity when out on the road. Work as a family to take pictures at different places along the way and grab mementos that could fit in a scrapbook. This lets you gather everything along the way so that you can create a great reminder of your trip when you get home. This will be a great way to look back on all the fun you and your family had while out on the road together.
